Sustainability at Leventhorpe

Wind Turbineswind turbines

Leventhorpe was the first school in Hertfordshire to have planning permission granted for two 6kW wind turbines. The first wind turbine was installed in August 2006.  Funding was supported by Clear Skies, East Herts Council and Friends of the Earth. The second wind turbine was installed in 2008 and funding was this time supported by BERR (Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform), Credit Suisse, Letchworth Roofing and NPower.  In addition to the above sponsors, the school's own fund raising initiatives (helped by the School's Energy Group) have ensured the installation of the second wind turbine and students’ awareness of sustainability issues.

  • The main objectives of this project are:
  • The educational value to our students and our wider community
  • The production of green energy to save greenhouse gases and so reduce our ecological footprint
  • The reduction of our electricity costs which would then enable us to fund other educational projects.

Solar Thermal Panels

In addition to our two wind turbines, we also have solar thermal panels on the Leisure Centre roof.  These panels heat the water which is used for showering and washing in the sports facility.  This project has been part funded by BRE (Building Research Establishment) Community Sustainable Energy Programme - an award partner of the BIG Lottery Fund.

Recycling

We also recycle our paper, cardboard, steel, light tubes, batteries and unclaimed clothing.  We receive small payments from a recycling company who recycle toners, cartridges and mobile phones.  Used stamps are saved and sent to charities who receive cash from stamp collectors.
